Graphic design students compete,
succeed at regional competition

Eight graphic design students at Arkansas State University were recently recognized at a regional design competition in Memphis. The students were all enrolled in a graphic design three class taught by Kim Vickrey, assistant professor of graphic design in the Department of Art in the College of Fine Arts.

The PUSH Design Conference is an annual meeting where university students from Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Arkansas attend with advertising professionals for tours, speakers, portfolio reviews and a design competition. The conference was sponsored by the Memphis Advertising Federation.

There were 104 student entries this year from the five states, and only 25 were accepted. Two designs by ASU student teams were selected for competition.

Vickrey assigned the students a restaurant project in which they were required to design a menu, a magazine ad, to-go packaging, stationery and one additional item of their choice. The two ASU student teams selected included the "Trogos Team" and the "Sell Your Soul Cafe Team."

Students on the "Trogos Team" and their hometowns include senior Melissa Carlisle of Jonesboro; junior Jamie Wooldridge of Marion; senior Sara Miller of Pocahontas; and senior Josh Kinder of Jacksonville. The "Sell Your Soul Cafe Team" includes senior Betsy Wyatt of Jonesboro; junior Mandy Bassett of Jonesboro; junior Nina Whitehead of Weiner; and junior Mary Reed of McGehee.

The "Sell Your Soul Cafe Team" was one team of only five teams at the competition to receive an award. Other winning schools included Mississippi State University, Memphis College of Art and Western Kentucky University.
