ASU Museum to feature

‘Arkansas Treasures’ photo exhibit

"
Arkansas Treasures: Looking Back, Then Forward" will be exhibited in the Arkansas State University Museum upstairs lobby beginning Jan. 21 and continuing through March 10.

The exhibit features 20 photographs of noteworthy African-Americans from Arkansas.

Included are artists, business people, physicians, attorneys, athletes, poets, musicians and others, with text about their accomplishments.

When the ASU Museum developed the exhibit, it received partial funding through a grant from the Arkansas Endowment for the Humanities.

The exhibit catalog states "The persons featured here represent an extraordinary century during which they have opened new paths, excelling beyond their contemporaries."

The people represented come from around the state with varied backgrounds and pursuits.

Among those included are Edith Irby Jones, the first black person to be accepted by and graduate from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine; John Johnson, founder and publisher of Ebony and Jet magazines; Lencola Sullivan, the first black woman to win the title of Miss Arkansas; Thomas Hill, who won the bronze medal in the 110-meter high hurdles at the 1972 Olympics and graduated from ASU the same year.

The museum is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There is no admission and the public is invited.
