25, 2001 Museum features 'Arkansas Made: Early Main Streets in Northeast Arkansas' In celebration of Arkansas Heritage Month, the Arkansas State University Museum will exhibit "Arkansas Made: Early Main Streets in Northeast Arkansas" at The Jonesboro Sun Gallery, May 1-31. The exhibition features photographs of 14 surrounding towns during an era very different from our own. "Main Street" was the seat of commerce, justice and culture when these photographs were made. It was the place where one learned all the latest news and gossip, according to a Museum spokesman. Included in the exhibition are Marmaduke in 1929, Manila in 1921, Wynne in the 1920s, Rector in 1908, Blytheville in 1909, Jonesboro in the 1940s, Nettleton in 1906, Lake City in the early 1900s, Piggott in 1916, Brookland in 1920, Marked Tree in the 1920s, Forrest City in 1920, Trumann in 1914 and Bono in 1920. This project was made possible in part by a grant from the Department of Arkansas Heritage, funded by the one-eighth cent conservation tax, Amendment 75. A public reception to open the exhibition will be held at The Jonesboro Sun Gallery, 518 Carson St., on Saturday, May 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to drop by while downtown for the Main Street Celebration, sponsored by the Jonesboro Women of Today. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. |
