Student injured in fall down elevator shaft

(This information will be updated as more details become known)

Brandon Rollins, a freshman from Irving, Texas, was injured when he fell down an elevator shaft from the second floor to the basement of Twin Towers Residence Hall at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5.

He was transported to St. Bernard’s Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro by Emerson Ambulance. He was later airlifted to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Med Center in Little Rock.

He underwent surgery Wednesday to treat injuries sustained in the incident, and the surgery was considered successful.

ThyssenKrupp Elevator Corp. is currently handling the inspection of the residence hall elevators. The elevator involved in the incident, the northeast shaft, has been closed as well as the southeast shaft because of proximity. The remaining two elevators in the residence hall are in working order and open for use.

ThyssenKrupp and university officials are working with University Police to determine the cause and nature of the incident.

More details will be released as it becomes available.
