NRCS to feature "Arkansas Delta Agriculture,
Community in Transition, 1920-1980" photo exhibit

Arkansas State University Delta Studies Center’s "Arkansas Delta Agriculture and Community in Transition, 1920-1980: An Oral History," is now on exhibit at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) office located in the Federal Building at 700 W. Capitol in Little Rock, through March 4.

The exhibit features 31 photographs of individuals who were interviewed as a part of an oral history project.

Included are farmers, housewives, former teachers, community activists, business owners, doctors, mayors, judges and others, with quotes about their experiences living within the Arkansas Delta during the 1920-1980s.

Funding for this project was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Natural Resources Conservation Service, under the auspices of the East Arkansas Resource Conservation and Development Council, with additional support from Congressman Marion Berry. ASU provided in-kind and matching funds for the two-year project.

The exhibit catalog states "the project time frame from 1920 to 1980 was a period of transformation in agriculture and in the communities whose very existence depended on the farm economy. This is their story, how they arrived, how they lived, and how they prospered." The people represented come from the Arkansas Delta with varied backgrounds and pursuits.

Among those included are Calvin Fields, a farmer from Grubbs who speaks about clearing of the land to get it ready for farming back in the 1920's and ‘30's; Joe Garcia, a farm worker from Parkin who discusses migration farming; the late M.C. Jeffers, Sr., a community activist from Forrest City who talks about the first time his family received lights in the 1940's; Virginia Holt, an alderwoman from Stuttgart who recalled paying the poll tax; Olly Neal, appellate judge, of Marianna, who talks about putting together a rural health center in Lee County.

The Federal Building is open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is no admission fee and the public is invited.
