Lecture~Concert Series
to host Dr. Karen Drake

Dr. Karen Drake will present "A Medical Pioneer: The Historic Delivery of the McCaughey Septuplets," on Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Arkansas State University Museum, lecture room 182, as the next program in the Lecture~Concert Series. The program is a joint presentation with KASU-FM, the public radio service of ASU.

Leading a team of 40 doctors and nurses at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Drake and Dr. Paula Mahone delivered only the second set of septuplets ever born alive, and the first set ever to survive. The historic McCaughey delivery took only six minutes and occurred in November 1997.

Drake, a perinatologist at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, received her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She served as a resident in obstetrics and gynecology in SUNY in Buffalo, N.Y., and is the recipient of a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

Drake will make a second appearance on the ASU campus Friday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. in Riceland Hall in the Fowler Center. The doctor will speak to area junior high students from Blytheville, Osceola, Turrell, Earle, Forrest City and Marianna. This event is sponsored by the College of Nursing and Health Professions and a grant supported project, "Delta CLASS." The purpose of the grant is to recruit more minority students into health professions programs.

Both events are free and open to the public.
