Childhood Services to host

‘Who’s Watching the Children?’

Childhood Services at Arkansas State University, in association with Crowley’s Ridge Education Service Cooperative, will present "Who’s Watching the Children," Monday, Feb. 25, in the Reng Center Ballroom on campus.

The day-long program is designed to education and inform parents, caregivers, service providers and the general public about the dangers children face on a daily basis in homes, schools and neighborhoods. The program will also provide safety tips and preventative techniques for protecting children.

Presentation objectives include promotion of community awareness and understanding of the problems surrounding child abduction, abuse, neglect and exploitation; to improve awareness of resources available to parents and children; and to educate participants on the potential dangers to children in cyberspace.

Presenters for the event include Steve McBride, executive director for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children; Colleen Nick, founder of the Morgan Nick Foundation; and Carol Robinson, from the office of the Arkansas Attorney General.

McBride has been a member of the Kansas City Police Department since 1986 and is the recipient of numerous awards and commendations from across the country. A portion of his presentation will focus on awareness of potential dangers children face in cyberspace.

Nick is the mother of Morgan Nick, who was tragically abducted in 1995 when she was six years old. Nick has become a strong advocate for legislation designed to protect communities from offenders who prey on children.

She will present information on the services available from the MNF, as well as how to empower our children with skills necessary to protect themselves from the potential dangers of abduction.

Robinson serves as a prevention and education instructor in the Outreach Division of the Attorney General’s office. She also serves as coordinator of the Arkansas Missing Children Services Program, and presents various programs such as youth suicide prevention and child safety. She will provide information on the "Keys to Safety Program."

A full-day professional development workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and an evening session for the general public will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Pre-registration is recommended due to limited seating.
