Sheila Landis Trio first on
Communiversity schedule for year

The Sheila Landis Trio will be the first program this fall in the Arkansas State University Communiversity schedule. The five-time winner of the "Best Jazz Vocalist" award by the Detroit Music Awards, will perform in Riceland Hall at Fowler Center Thursday evening at 7:30.

Landis has been performing her unique style of jazz and blues since 1973, and has appeared at Michigan's most prestigious festivals and concert venues. She draws her inspiration from classic jazz vocalists Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Billie Holiday, as well as from such modern artists as Joni Mitchell, Flora Purim, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stevie Wonder. Her top-notch bands provide the color, kick and musical interplay that make a Landis concert a special event.

Guitarist and musical partner Rick Matle finger picks his full-sounding Gibson hollowbody guitar creating an intimate yet amazingly full accompaniment to Landis’ melodic interpretations of standards, Latin and blues. Percussionist Dennis Sheridan adds exciting Latin, world beat, and traditional swing rhythms to the mix. The Trio plays a variety of styles emphasizing swing, jazz, blues and Latin styles including Bossa Nova and Samba.
