16, 2001 Julia Butterfly Hill to speak at Fowler Center, Oct. 24 Downloadable Image Julia Butterfly Hill will speak at two events at Arkansas State University on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Fowler Center as part of the Communiversity Series. The first session, which is for students only, will be in the Grand Hall at 5:30 p.m. A second session will follow in Riceland Hall at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Both events are free. Julia Butterfly Hill suffered nearly fatal injuries in an auto accident in 1996. During her medical treatment and recovery, she said she had time to reassess her purpose in life. Two weeks after being released by her doctors she headed west. In December 1997, 23-year-old Hill climbed the remarkable 1,000 year-old redwood tree she calls "Luna" in protest of a lumber company’s plans to cut down the old-growth redwood forest in which it resided. Two years later, she successfully negotiated permanent protection of the 200-foot tall tree and a three-acre buffer zone surrounding the area. Since her decent, Hill has helped form the Circle of Life Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to promote, support, and network with individuals, communities, and organizations in developing social and environmental solutions. She has also told her amazing story of conviction, perseverance, and courage in her book "The Legacy of Luna." For more information, call 870-972-2056 ## # |
