August issue of ‘Arkansas Review’
focuses on study of 1919 riots at Elaine

The August issue of "Arkansas Review," a magazine specializing in the Mississippi River Delta and published by the Department of English and Philosophy at Arkansas State University, focuses on the Elaine, Arkansas, Race Riots of 1919.

Guest-edited by C. Calvin Smith, professor of history at ASU, the issue includes presentations and panel discussions from a March 2000 conference at the Delta Cultural Center in Helena.

Arising from a dispute over tenant farmers and workers’ efforts to organize a union in Phillips County, the October 1919 violence resulted in at least 30 deaths. Federal troops were called in, and legal cases resulting from the violence made their way to the U. S. Supreme Court.

Contributors to the August issue of "Arkansas Review" include Tom W. Dillard, director of the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at the Central Arkansas Library System at Little Rock; Jeannie M. Whayne, chair of the Department of History at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville; Ronnie A. Nichols, former director of Little Rock's Old State House Museum; John William Graves, professor of history at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia; and Griffin J. Stockley, Little Rock attorney whose book on the Elaine violence will be published this fall by the University of Arkansas Press.

The issue also includes transcriptions of panel discussions from the 2000 conference and short presentations of useful sources and resources by Cary Cox of the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies and Sarah Wilkerson-Freeman, associate professor of history at ASU.

Cost of the issue is $7.50. Subscriptions to "Arkansas Review" (three issues) are $20. Checks should be made payable to "ASU Foundation" with "Arkansas Review" on the memo line.
