a.m., Sept. 11, 2001 University President says safety and security of students, faculty and staff is priority Arkansas State University President Les Wyatt said this morning that all reasonable steps are being taken to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty and staff at ASU. Although the university has not received any threats, Dr. Wyatt has asked all administrative officers to take whatever steps are necessary to deal with any aftermath that may result at ASU from apparent terrorist attacks on the United States this morning. "While taking steps to ensure everyone’s safety, the university will continue its operations as normally as possible, with the exception of some event cancellations," Wyatt said. "I have asked everyone to remain vigilant in our awareness of any developments which might occur on our campus." The student activity, "Order of the Tribe," has been canceled for this evening because the main speaker was unable to travel to Jonesboro. Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee issued a statement earlier today saying that state buildings are secure, and state offices will remain open as usual. He also said that law enforcement and emergency management agencies are coordinating their efforts to ensure public safety. Information about cancellations or other developments will be on the university’s web site, at /response.htm. Media inquiries should be directed to the University Communications Office, (870) 972-3056. # # # |
