ASU Orchestra to present
Scholarship Benefit Concert

The Arkansas State University Orchestra will present a Scholarship Benefit Concert Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Riceland Hall at Fowler Center, located at 201 Olympic Drive. The ensemble will be under the direction of Dr. Neale Bartee.

A scholarship program was established in 1996 to assist string students who participate in the orchestra. The program is funded by donations to the Aileen Matthews String Music Scholarship Fund. Additional support is needed in order to assure continued growth of the orchestra program at ASU.

The scholarship is named for Aileen Matthews of Jonesboro, who in the early 1970s began teaching a large number of private students using a Suzuki-based approach. Many of these students played in the ASU String Orchestra and later the Northeast Arkansas Symphony.

Scholarship money is available to music majors and students majoring in other fields. Students are eligible by audition and must participate in orchestra as well as enroll in private lessons.

The program will consist of "Orpheus in the Underworld" by Jacques Offenbach; "Cello Concerto in E minor Op. 85" by Edward Elgar; "Procession of the Nobles" by Nicholas Rimsky-Korsakov, arranged by Merle J. Isaac; "Andante Cantabile" by Peter I. Tchaikovsky, arranged by Theo M. Tobani; "John Henry" by Aaron Copland; "Pavane for a Dead Princess" by Maurice Ravel; and "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity From the Planets" by Gustav Holst, edited by Clinton F. Nieweg.

Faculty member Jonathan Kirkscey, a member of the Memphis Symphony, will perform a solo for the Cello Concerto.

Orchestra personnel include Rebecca Markowski, Concertmaster, Jenny Pham, Bill Keisker, Audra Edgin, Sharon Davison, Emily Meeker, first violin; Ann Swaty, Samantha Meeker, Roby Johnson, Emily Riggin, Nicole Pug, Linda Jorgensen, second violin; Paul Markowski, Melanie McPherson, Marcia Burns, viola; Elaine Bartee, Megan Matthews, Aaron Riggin, cello; John Hays, bass; Denise Seel, Candace Harrison, Sandy Risi, flute/piccolo; Leigh Ann Woodard, Miguel Picanco, oboe;
