University Museum receives
collection conservation grant from IMLS

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has awarded the Arkansas State University Museum a Conservation Assessment Program Grant, according to Dr. Ruth Hawkins, interim director of the Museum.

The grant program will allow conservation specialist Mary Friedrickson of Art Care International to visit the Museum in August to complete a survey of the Museum’s collections. During her visit Friedrickson will review the overall condition of the museum’s collection, the physical storage and exhibition conditions, and the collection practices among other factors.

The ASU Museum will receive approximately $3,500 to continue its conservation work.

"The assessment will help us establish immediate and long-term goals," James Tichgelaar, museum registrar, said. "The professional conservationist will help us identify collections that we can improve upon, and help us develop long-term care of our collections.

"The report given by the specialist and our long-range plan will also be used in support of other grant applications."

The Museum was one of only 147 grants awarded throughout the United States. The grant, which is funded by IMLS and administered by Heritage Preservation, supports museums of all kinds.

"I am really proud of the professional level of our Museum and our ongoing efforts to serve as a model for other museums throughout the state and region," Hawkins said. "This will help insure that we maintain those high standards of quality."

IMLS is a federal grantmaking agency located in Washington, D.C. that fosters leadership, innovation and a lifetime of learning by supporting museums and libraries.

"As a leader in preventative conservation, IMLS is dedicated to helping our nation’s museums protect their collections," Beverly Sheppard said on behalf of the agency. "According to a recent evaluation of the Conservation Assessment Program by Bosma and Associates, International, the grants have had an impact on increasing conservation awareness nationwide. Additionally, 95 percent of grant recipients report fulfilling some or most of the conservation assessment recommendations."
