9, 2002 University to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day "Yesterday’s dreams, today’s vision, tomorrow’s reality," is the theme chosen for the 2002 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at Arkansas State University. The Student Government Association and the Office of Minority Affairs is sponsoring five days of activities, beginning with the 28th annual Unity March sponsored by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The march will begin on Monday at 4:30 p.m. in front of Arkansas Hall, located on Aggie Road. A candlelight vigil sponsored by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., will follow in the Reng Center Ballroom. The Black Student Association will have a birthday cake in the Reng Center Ballroom on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Samuel Irvin will give a lecture later that evening at 7 in the Ballroom. He will also have a workshop Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Reng Center Ballroom. The annual MLK Talent Showcase will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Reng Center Ballroom. The week of events will conclude Friday evening at 7 with an awards banquet in the Grand Hall at Fowler Center, located on Olympic Drive. Awards will be given to three deserving black students for their outstanding efforts on the ASU campus. The categories include student of the year (the student will receive an award of $250); the community service award; and the academic achievement award. The MLK Service Award will go to the student organization that has done the most for the campus and community. Classes will not be held Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. # # # |
