6, 2001 University recognized by Kaplan/Newsweek Catalog again Arkansas State University was recognized for the second consecutive year by the Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalog as an institution that is responsive to student financial aid needs. University officials were notified this week by a representative of Kaplan Publishing. The publication ranks top institutions in a number of categories after randomly interviewing high school guidance counselors across the nation. The catalog also contains a list of more than 1,000 colleges and university nationwide, with brief descriptions of each. Information in the catalog is based upon market research provided by the national marketing firm Market Measurement. Personnel from the firm conducted telephone interviews of high school guidance counselors randomly selected from a sample of public, private and Catholic high schools throughout the United States, according to Lori Duggan Gold, Kaplan public relations manager. Arkansas State University was listed among the 33 top selections, which included universities such as Harvard College, Northeastern University, Dartmouth College and Princeton. "Our department is very pleased to once again this receive this honor," Gregory Thornburg, director of financial aid and scholarships. "We have made a commitment the last three years to re-engineer our customer service procedures. We believe we are making a difference for students who want to attend ASU and don't have the financial resources to do so." Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Rick Stripling said he was very pleased to be included in the national survey. "Without question this is a significant recognition for our financial aid staff. National recognition for being responsive to individual student financial needs is important, considering we process $38 million annually. Our financial aid office receives approximately 18,000 applications each year, and their ability to maintain a high level of customer service is exemplary," Stripling said. "Our staff members are committed to assisting students with every step in the application process for grants, scholarships, and loans. Many students bring their unique situations to the attention of our staff. We do our best to meet those needs one student at a time," Thornburg concluded. The catalog will be available at local bookstores including Hastings Books, Music and Video, 1315 South Caraway Rd., and Books-A-Million, 1515 South Caraway Rd. # # #
