7, 2001 Hundreds of young musicians to participate in ASU Band Day Approximately 800 young musicians from area schools will gather at Indian Stadium at Arkansas State University for Band Day on Saturday, Sept. 15, as the Indians take on Nicholls State at their first home game. Initiated in the 1970s by the late Don Minx, director of bands at ASU, Band Day was very successful and an excellent way for junior high and high school musicians to participate with a university band. For a period of time Band Day was suspended, but under the direction of Ed Alexander, interim director of bands, Band Day resumed in 1995. Students gather for mass band rehearsal with the ASU Marching Indian Band before a tailgate party at Indian Stadium. The junior high and high school students play with the university band in the stands at the game, then join the older students on the field for a mass band halftime performance. Some bands march their complete program before university music faculty and students for helpful critiques before the schools enter their busy contest season. Area schools that will participate in this year’s event include Blytheville High School, Bruce Shannon, director; Cave City High School, Cindy Payton, director; Cord-Charlotte High School, Jeanne Whitner, director; Hazen High School, Roxanne Bradow, director; Corning High School, David Hall, director; Manila High School, Jon Meyer, director; Marked Tree High School, Thomas Walker, director; Nettleton Junior High and High School bands, Grant Brinkle and Peggy Jeffries, directors; Newport High School, Brand Robinson, director; Rivercrest High School, Craig Wadley, director; Trumann Junior High School, Steve Cazort, director; Walnut Ridge High School, John Long, director; and Wynne Junior High and High School bands, Lori Shepard and Randy Meyer, directors. # # # |
